This fantastic piece by Erik Morales was commissioned by Gary and Kristin Mortenson to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the International Trumpet Guild. Gary Mortenson writes 'The image used for the cover of the 2011 ITG Music Supplement is of Notre Dame Cathedral on the banks of the Seine in Paris, France. The photo was taken in November of 2006 by Gary Mortenson during a trip there to cover The Sixth Concours de trompette Maurice André for the International Trumpet Guild. Notre Dame is a particularly appropriate choice for this cover as it is the exact location where Leonine and his successor Pectin 5active in the late 12th and early 13th centuries) composed the earliest polyphonic music preserved in Western civilisation fir use in religious services at the cathedral. These Notre Dame composers grounded their music on pre-existing melodies, a practice that became known as cantus firmus, from the huge body of Gregorian Chant that had been composed anonymously over many centuries prior to their arrival at the cathedral. One can easily imagine that Within Sacred Walls would resonate beautifully within Notre Dame today, more than 800 years after the first polyphonic sounds reverberated throughout this sacred structure'. This fantastic festive piece was originally arranged for a large brass ensemble featuring trumpets, horns, trombones, and tuba, by William Berry, but has been reimagined and recorded entirely on trumpet and flugelhorn! I hopefully capture the essence of Berry's vibrant and energetic arrangement that brings the holiday spirit to life. As Berry himself describes, 'Tis always the season for "carols at the spinet" so here is a bit of holiday insanity. If you can stay more focused than I can, maybe you can get all of the quotes. If not, that's what the video is for. The thing about holiday music is it comes back every year, so people have heard these tunes all their lives, which makes the snippets recognizable. Without that, it wouldn't be funny. We do try to have a good time...but keeping them in line is like herding cats. The original music to La Péri was written in 1911 by Paul Dukas as a Poème dansé en un tableau ("dance poem in one scene"), his last published work. Although not as well known as his famous symphonic poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the ballet has been considered to be one of his most mature and skilled pieces. The music's style can best be described as a mixture of Romantic tonal harmony and orchestration techniques with Impressionism, and is distinctly French.
